Lesley from Eyes on Animals was contracted out by the organization "Animals' Angels" to assist in the training of 25 gendarmes on the EU animal-welfare legislation protecting animals during transport. The training took place at the National Gendarmerie School in Fontainebleau, France. The aim of these trainings is to educate the French gendarmes so that they are capable of enforcing the animal-welfare legislation when confronted with a livestock lorry. On this day we also met a gendarme who recently started training the motorcycle-gendarmes on animal welfare during transport, now that this topic is a part of their curriculum. She came to get experience and we will now provide her with animal transport photos that she can use during her training courses.

"A law is only as effective as its enforcement"
The European animal transport legislation was created with the aim of preventing animal suffering during transport. Unfortunately in practice, this legislation is still too often ignored , resulting in animals forced to endure crowded conditions, lack of water and food, injuryand exhaustion. . Once an animal truck leaves its place of loading, it can be hours and even days before the animals arrive at their destination. During these long journeys, there are sadly no routine inspections. The animals in transit urgently need the highway police throughout Europe to get involved. They have the authority to stop livestock trucks on the road and fine the perpetrator. Unfortunately, the highway police do not learn about the animal transport laws in their standard curriculum. This is why we offer the trainings to them ourselves.
Lesley Moffat, currently Director of Eyes on Animals, started this training program in France in 2004 while working as an animal transport investigator for Animals´ Angels. To date, over 1200 French highway police have gone through the training and hundreds of livestock trucks have been inspected and fined. Lesley from Eyes on Animals continues to run this program for Animals´ Angels in France.
